It’s been really exciting here in the shop this past week seeing customers come in wanting a last minute Holiday gift for the stitcher in their family or for one of their friends.

It always seems to evolve into a conversation about what a fabulous needleworker someone is, about the family traditions that have arisen around someone’s needlework, and about special memories–times watching a loved one sit and stitch, times being taught to embroider, needlepoint, crochet.

Often there are expressions of sadness that needlework is becoming a dying art.  I can’t tell you how often I hear comments like, “People just don’t seem to be doing it anymore”. 

On the other hand, I seem to be getting more customers looking for projects to teach daughters, grandchildren, nieces and nephews how to stitch.  I talked with a woman recently who was looking for a simple embroidery kit for her grandaughter and was so excited becasue she had just taught her  to sew on a button.

I think many of us who are stitchers have fond memories of being taught by someone we loved, and there seems to be something about this time of year that brings those memories back to us.

Perhaps we can all find a few moments in the coming days to share our love of stitching whith someone special–whether it be giving a gift we’ve created or finding an opportunity to invite that youngster to sit next to you and  try their very first stitch.

Thinking of Stitching. . .

Are we all surviving the last minute holiday rush?  I don’t about you, but I think I’ve reached my saturation point.  I actually have a tree up with lights, but for some strange reason the decorations are still in the box.

Well, the real reason is that I had full intentions to decorate the tree when the urge to stitch came over me.  I finally finished my Voila shoes over the weekend and my Julie Mar canvas (gorgeous frog in ferns) kept calling me.  So–stitch or decorate?  What a foolish question.

Tonight I’ll decorate first and reward myself with stitching!  I promise.

Yesterday I had to run into town to pick up my new glasses and thought I’d take a few minutes before going into the shop to do a little extra shopping.  Well, once I looked at the parking lots, I decided that no one in my household would miss that extra poinsettia, the new holiday tablecloth I wanted, or some little do-dad they weren’t expecting anyway.  Besides, I rationalized, the table where I was going to put that extra pointsettia is know home to my son’s fish which he brought home from college.
